Indian cinema is set to have an impressive showing at the 75th Cannes Film Festival which opens on May 17. The prestigious festival will be attended by a host of Bollywood celebrities this year. Among those reportedly walking the red carpet are Akshay Kumar, music maestro AR Rahman, R Madhavan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Nayanthara, Tamannaah Bhatia, Shekhar Kapur, CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi, Ricky Kej and more.
It was announced earlier that India is the official “country of honour” at the Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film). This is the first time the honour has been given to any country in the history of the film festival. Interestingly, the year also marks 75 years of Independence for India, making it a special milestone.
One of the highlights of the festival from India is the world premiere of R Madhavan-led Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. Based on ISRO aerospace engineer Nambi Narayan who was falsely accused of espionage, the film is billed as a biographical drama. Produced by Madhavan, the feature will reportedly get its red carper opening on May 19.
Earlier, the Cannes Film Festival announced that the competition jury that will unveil the Palme d’Or honours will include Deepika Padukone best known for her roles in Padmavat, Piku, Bajirao Mastani and more. The jury led by Vincent Lindon, the star of the previous Palme d’Or-winning French film Titane boasts of Rebecca Hall, Joachim Trier, Jeff Nichols and Jasmine Trinca among others.
The 2022 Cannes Film Festival will take place between May 17 to May 28.
